In the late 1960's there were few places to turn for help once a stroke survivor was released from the hospital. Stroke recovery programs began as people saw a need for post-hospital care and recovery. In 1974 the first stroke recovery program in BC was started by a group of stroke survivors who attended a day centre in North Vancouver. They met twice a month with the aim to help other stroke survivors adjust to their situation using a peer support format.
About the North Shore Stroke Recovery Centre
![]()

The North Shore Stroke Recovery Centre provides post-hospital peer-based support and continued recovery for stroke survivors and caregivers living in the community. Wellness and independence are the primary goals of this program.
Only those who have personally experienced the sudden changes relating to strokes can fully understand your challenges, frustrations, and needs. Coping skills are explored collectively and resources provided, where possible.
Stroke Recovery Centre Members assist each other through the challenges of living with a chronic condition. Join us and become a partner in your own recovery.

Our program has developed over the past 35 years. At present we offer speech maintenance, an exercise program, music therapy and computer based speech training. There are a range of other social, recreational and educational activities. Blood pressure can be checked on request and beverages will be provided throughout the day. Members are asked to bring their own lunches. Guest speakers visit throughout the year and speak on various topics of interest.
We recognize that this is a very difficult time for you and those near you. We hope to provide support in both you and your relatives during the recovery process. We have a Caregiver Support Group for those interested that meets monthly at our West Vancouver location on the last Monday of the month from 12:30 - 2:00pm.
